Successful career
The birth of "Lady Gaga"
At 19, Germanotta had signed with Def Jam Recordings. Through them, she was introduced to the songwriter and producer RedOne, who would have a huge impact on her career. After three months, she was however dropped from the label, and she continued on her own by forming the “Stefani Germanotta Band” together with some friends from the university. They performed at various clubs on the Lower East Side, gaining some reputation.
The name “Lady Gaga” originates from this period. The producer Rob Fusari who worked with Germanotta during this period explains that it was a re-writing of the Queen song “Radio Ga Ga”. He had always compared her singing to that of Freddie Mercury, and writing her a text message, it auto-corrected “Radio Ga Ga” to “Lady Gaga”. She replied “That’s it”. After that day, Stefani Germanotta was known as Lady Gaga.
Performance shows with the Ladies
Lady Gaga continued performing in various arrangements in New York clubs. In 2007, she began working with performance artist Lady Starlight whose ideas of using fashion on stage greatly influenced Lady Gaga. Together, they set up the live performance act “Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue” which received very positive reviews at the Lollapalooza music festival. During this period, the focus of Lady Gaga’s music turned from avant-garde and electronic dance music to a more mainstream pop sound, though still greatly influenced by the glam rock of Queen and David Bowie.
The first album
Producer Rob Fusari was the one putting Lady Gaga in touch with the record executive and producer Vincent Herbert. Herbert helped her getting signed once again, and for some time she worked with writing songs for artists such as Britney Spears, Fergie, Pussycat Dolls and New Kids on the Block. She also made some backing vocals, and during such a session, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her singing, and convinced the music company to let her make her own album

But isn't the whole "Radio Ga Ga" -> "Lady Gaga" an urban myth? Sounds like it's been constructed afterwards. Or is that just me?
- James Shephard, 19 May 2010
Yea, definately sounds like it. But still, some of the "myths" has to true someday, right?
